Milestones

The operational life of the High Flux Reactor runs beyond 2015. Given the age of the HFR and the time that is needed to prepare for the construction of a new reactor, NRG began a project in 2004 in cooperation with Covidien (Mallinckrodt Medical), the Institute for Energy of the European Commission and the Technical University Delft. This project will lead to the construction and operation of a new reactor.

There are three important phases in the PALLAS Project:

•  preparation phase, 1 to 2 years

•  licensing and detailed design phase, 2 to 3 years

•  construction and start of operation phase, 4 to 5 years

The conceptual design, based on NRG’s technical specifications for PALLAS, will be ready in 2010, ushering the start of the detailed design phase. The licensing procedure for the actual construction has already started and will run parallel to the preparation and design phase of the project.
