It is clear that the construction of the new reactor will require an investment of several hundred million euros. It is also quite clear that within a few decades financial merits will exceed this investment.
The international nuclear market is growing, both in terms of health care (isotopes) and industrial (nuclear capacity). PALLAS will guarantee the Netherlands a world leading position in nuclear health care and nuclear energy supplies. Both are growing markets for the near future and will lead to direct high-quality employment and reinforcement of nuclear expertise.
The exact budget needed depends on the location and the associated detailed design. Matters such as existing infrastructure, the availability of cooling water and the landscape influence the cost of construction. The government has to take a decision on investment in PALLAS in the near future.
In the exploitation of Pallas both public and private interests play a role. Public interests have to do with research for sustainable energy and with guaranteed availability of medical isotopes for the treatment of patients. Private interests are focused on commercial irradiations and the production of isotopes. Therefore, a public private partnership will be formed.
