Diagnosis
Patients are injected with a small quantity of radioactivity combined with a biochemical which goes to the part of the body that needs to be examined. This type of diagnosis has major advantages over other diagnostic methods. Instead of making only an anatomical image of the patient, radio diagnostic techniques also produce a functional image. It is possible to see how organs perform and abnormalities can be detected.

Therapy
There are two types of treatment of life threatening diseases such as cancer:
> Radio-pharmaceutical therapy is based on tracers that perform their beneficial work in the body by tracing and destroying cancer cells. Isotopes are used to treat cancer and to suppress pain that cancer patients suffer from.
> Brachy-therapie is based on internal irradiation of cancer cells. A radioactive source is attached to a needle or to a small metal ball and put directly into a tumor. This is an effective therapy with good results and few side effects.

Pain suppression
Patients who suffer from certain types of cancer who are at a terminal stage of their life, can experience pain caused by metastasis to the bone. These medical isotopes irradiate the nerve ends of certain spots in the body so that they are numbed and the pain diminishes or disappears.
